ARIZONA DAY 7 -- JEEPIN' !!!

Wednesday afternoon we drove from Phoenix to Lake Havasu City through some pretty desolate countryside. On Thursday we went jeepin' in the Arizona Desert. We were ready to go by 10:00am. That's pretty good for us. We had picked up our jeep (her name was Elle) the night before. We grabbed sandwiches and chips at Blimpies and were on our way. We had chosen 2 trails to try. The first was called Rovey's Needle and Cattail Cove. It was a fun adventure and we were able to find 4 geocaches as well. Rovey's Needle was an amazing rock that was the core of an ancient volcano. Getting there was pretty hairy, ascending some very steep and narrow dirt trails. Then it was on to Cattail Cove at the Bill Williams Waterway inlet from Lake Havasu...lots of bumps through several washes and a Smoketree forest. Our second trail was Desert Bar Backway...a rugged 4-wheelin' adventure. After a couple of steep climbs we were in a very rocky wash and eventually had to cash in our chips, Forestal. We didn't make it all the way to The Bar. But we had plenty of crazy 4-Wheelin' in places most vehicles never go. We ended by finding cache #5 Ocotillo Ridge on our way back to the city just after the sun had gone down around 8:00pm. Yeah, we spent about 10 hours enjoying the day and getting sunburnt. We only saw 1 other vehicle, parked off on another trail, and no people, the whole day. So we really got away from it all!

Our Rubicon Jeep named Elle.

Mom at the eye of the needle on the west side of the rock.

Actually this "needle" had 2 "eyes".

Dad by the unusual honeycomb formations on the walls of the needle.

Mom by some more of the honeycomb features.

There were a number of steep hills to climb. Dad had to get out several times to check to see which way the trail went before we got to the top and couldn't see where we were going because the nose of the jeep was so high.

Cattail Cove at the end of the trail.

The easy part of the Desert Bar Backway trail.

Here's where we cashed it in. The wash became too narrow and too rocky!!
What a day!

That needle is something else --worth the jeepin'. Talmage LOVED Grandpa in the Jeep, and when asked about "this 'needle' had 'two eyes'" photo, he said, "That's Grandma, with the dragon."
