The Midwest--July 2010--Day #8 Iowa and Wisconsin

We spent the morning in the Amana Colonies. This is amazing Lily Lake...lilies for as far as you can see.

Close-up of lilies.

Amana Lily Lake, bridge and geese.

A museum of miniatures in a barn in South Amana.

Here's the Barn Museum.

Miniature rural American town.

Miniature school and playground.

Miniature farm.

Neigh Neigh.

Funny art.

Iowa's largest rocking chair made out of solid walnut weighing 670 pounds!

A fun basket and broom store in the colonies.

Chicken outside the shop.

Furniture shop where we got to see furniture being made and I bought a souvenir carved alder mushroom.

The woolen mill.

Spools on a Creel?

Weaving the blue threads.

Old loom.

Toy store in Amana (a photo just for you, Colby!)

Of course we stopped at the Fudge Factory for a purchase.

Amana barn.

Amana farmhouse.

Cornfield and barn.
I loved taking photos of Iowa barns!

Red barns and silos.

Here we are in Wisconsin in a town called Prairie du Chien...prairie of dogs or perhaps prairie dog! We came here for a geocache...lots of interesting history about skirmishes with Indians.
We spent the afternoon at a Wisconsin "pioneer village" called Stonefield. The Visitors Center was in an old barn.

Here's a plaque on the barn that shows a map of our travels!

Through the covered bridge.

The stores.

Across from the stores were some long, large sheep barns/sheds displaying the evolution of agriculture and the settlement of Wisconsin with all kinds of old machinery from manure spreaders to threshers. Here is an antique tractor.

A separator...cream from milk.

The interesting and well-stocked general store.

Fancy old chairs.

Old cameras.

Old classy buggy.

Pumper.

Caboose and little "car/trike" used to inspect the rails.

Some of the original "out buildings" for the Nelson Dewey, first Governor or Wisconsin Mansion. I think this front one is a smoke house and the back one is the bunk house. Check out the brick chimney and little bird houses (?) on top.
Don't forget the Cheese Factory...this is "Cheese Head" country you know.

Poster inside the Cheese Factory.

Strip farming in Wisconsin.

Close-up of the soybeans and corn.

And this is Ramsey Road....unpaved, you'll notice. Oh, yes, somehow Mr. Pointer, our GPSr, sent us down this road, a short cut I guess, for about 10 miles. Actually, it was great fun with beautiful scenery. Sorry to put so many photos out here for this day...I could have put out a lot more. Not so many for the last 2 days, I promise!
