The Midwest--July 2010--Day #10 Completing the Circle back to Kansas City and Home

Our last day...it all sure seemed to go by fast. Now as I look back (and finish up these extensive blogs) I am amazed at how many places we went and how many things we got to do. Day #10 was essentially a drive back to Kansas City, Missouri and flight home. But we did stop at one more place...a wild life refuge and learning center in Prairie City, Iowa...close to Des Moines. It was a great place to end the trip. This learning center told all about the history of the vanishing prairie and what is being done to restore a chunk of it. We watched a movie first and then toured the museum.

Dad and big buffalo.

Dad and even bigger badger. This part was built for kids...to go "underground" and see what life is like there.

Afterwards we walked around outside...here is a Butterfly Garden.

Then for the last hurrah, we drove around some of the 5,000 acres on the auto tour route to see native plant and animal communities that have been recreated and are being preserved. This offered a look at the true prairies that greeted the pioneers....singing bird in the tall grass.

Tall wildflowers, probably Queen Anne's Lace.

Black-eyed Susans, my favorite.

Thanks for reading about our adventures and thanks for your comments. Someday maybe you'll be fortunate to see these amazing areas of our own United States, too.
